Sam worked behind the Starbucks' counter. He was wearing a pair of tan slacks and a black tee shirt with the Starbucks' emblem on it.
He finished taking a woman's order and waited for the next person to step up. His blond hair was neatly brushed back, but a few strands fell over one eye.
It was fairly quiet for this time of day, which was fine with him. He hated when things got busy. It was hard keeping track of who got who, but he managed to do it. He wiped his hands on a cloth and then left behind the counter do do some mopping. He grabbed the mop and bucket and began carefully mopping up some spilled coffee near the bathrooms. He sighed again.
He hated the fact that there was a limited number of people alive now because of the so called virus. He blamed most of the problem on the CDC for not testing the damn thing before they dished it out. But it was no use crying over spilled milk really. It was time to move on and make the best of things. Sam slowly moved the mop around in a circle, deep in thought

Rose Louise Gardens Walking alone again during the wet and cold frosty morning. Another day learning that she was having a baby alone. Her stomach was slightly swollen have she put on some extra, though she was lucky and haven't had morning sickness. Walking towards the coffee shop, just to have something hot inside her, as it was really cold. 'I can't do this alone' she thought more towards herself and a tear fell down her cheek. She haven't seen her best friends in years, since she pushed them all away due to her alcoholism. After finding out she is pregnant though she have stopped drinking and have been sober for eight weeks now. Hello can I have a mocha latte please to go she asked politely to the waiter and payed for her coffee and then went to a empty table. Coffee isn't good for pregnancy either, but she didn't know what else do and was really scared. Sitting on the chair, she wondered anyone she know would come and say hello to her at least, and give her a second chance.
Rose was reading something on the paper when she felt something hitting her leg. She looked up as her mist matched eyes saw Sam. "Sorry if I am in your way I would move. I didn't know anyone would be this far back" she said as went to get up, taking her coffee with her.

Sam turned to the young woman. He immediately stopped mopping. "oh no you dont have to get up," he said softly. "stay its ok"
He saw she was a few months pregnant. He leaned the mop against the wall.
He grabbed a chair and turned it backwards, and gently sat down, with his arms crossed over the back of it. He regarded her softly.
"Is your husband around here?" Sam implied curiously and in a friendly manner. "This place get's lonely being the afternoon rush hasn't come in yet. But I like the peace and quiet"
He smiled at her, his blue eyes catching the light.
"So, mind if I ask if you're from around here? Or are you just passing through?" Sam inquired curiously.
Some people just passed through, but the other states were probably more than likely in the same boat Maine was. There were more than a handful of survivors, there was actually a fair amount. It wasn't all that bad, but it was still unnerving really not to have your town the way it was before the viral outbreak. Creepy? Yes. Spooky? Yes. Sam felt a shiver run up his spine but he ignored it and waited for the young blond haired woman to reply

Rose Louise Gardens Rose looked at him and sat back down. Her arms wrapped around the small bump which was being to show some noticeable to others. Fear of bringing up a child into this world and alone was really scary business indeed. Her hair was wavering around as a breeze came into the building and hit her face softly. Her face soon looked at the table again as he asked her something which kind of hurt "Is your husband around here?".
"I don't have a husband sir. I am kind of alone. You see I am not marriage material. I am not loyal, and also my habit with drinking kind of pushed everyone I care about away from me, so I am alone now. Well until.. Until" she spoke softly as she took a sip of her coffee which was beginning to get cold. "I don't get out much. Not since after the virus began to change everyone, though I am not really caring about them basically. I just did it for the money, I was cruel woman back then, maybe I would never change."
She played with her wavy hair and her eyes were amazing. Very rare people have mis-matched eyes. Her left one was sapphire blue like the ocean, while the right one was green like the grass. Her dress was beauitful, silk satin coloured blue, sky blue and indigo blue. Placing her leg over the knee as he asked her another question. 'Whoa he is really asking personal questions and chatting me up' she thought as she responded to him.
"I was originally born in Seattle but moved here while I appiled the job here and gave out the vaccine to people. How about you are you originally from here?" She smiled a little which was rare for Rose these days. "The name is Rose by the way. Rose Louise Gardens, you are?" she asked and introduced herself, and offered her hand to be shaked with hers.

Sam smiled and shook her hand.
"Sorry if I appear to be asking personal questions" he said softly. "I'm just being friendly"
Sam grinned at her and then listened to her talking. His expression was abashed when she said how she didn't have a husband and how her alcohol was an issue. Sam exhaled slowly. He nodded.
"These are tough times. People handle the stress differently than say someone else" Sam said reasonably. "That's really not a reason to judge though."
She didn't have a husband? I find that hard to believe Sam thought as he cleared his throat and shifted his weight on the chair. His blue eyes caught her one blue and one green eye. They were unique and quite lovely. He rested his chin on top of his arm which was crossed on the back of the chair.
"I find it hard to believe that someone like you isn't married. I'm sure you just haven't found the right guy yet" Sam said brightly. "Kids are a miracle. I love kids. I was never married myself"
Sam offered honestly. He studied her. It was as though she was expecting him to just take her and sleep with her. Sam wasn't that kind of person. He would never do that to her or any woman for that matter. He respected them.

Rose Louise Gardens "Oh no it origh really. I just never found anyone who have been really nice to me before. All the men I have ran into have been nasty to me. All they wanted was to sleep with me or beat me up. Which could be the reason I drink tequila all the time and push everyone away, cause I am dark and twisty which my flaw." She explained to him as she smiled again
"Well I am single. It's nice really but lonely sometimes. My heart can never comminet to someone, who would like to try to." She replied a little sad like and looked at him some more. "Kids? Well they could be a miracle I suppose, if they have a father figure in their loves and a mother who could bring it up and raise it well I suppose, not like something like me", she looked down at her stomach and rubbed it a little.
"Sorry my stomach been hurting for a little while for few days" she made an excuse since she didn't want anyone to know she was pregnant. "You are sweet. Any girl would be lucky to have you that's for sure. I am sure you be great husband and wonderful father", she said as she blushed a little and looked away.

Sam blushed himself and smiled when she looked away.
"How many months are you?" Sam asked her curiously. "My mom was a nurse. She told me all the signs"
He smiled at her. It was cute how she looked away when she was embarrassed. He found it cute and refreshing. Most girls had thrown themselves at him. Now, Sam thought he was decent looking but nothing like those super model guys that paraded around. Society was too superficial.
Sam raised his right wrist and checked the time. He turned his attention onto the woman again.
"I'm Sam. Sam Myers. Sorry I hadn't mentioned my name before" Sam chuckled. "I get off work in about 10 minutes. How about I walk you home? The streets really aren't all that safe right now" Sam said softly.
There were a few re-animated walking around, so you had to be vigilant. Sam knew how to use a gun but only when it was necessary. He killed a few Re-Animated in his time. They weren't human anymore and that's what some people tended to forget. They had no congnitory skills or even memory of their old lives. They were basically machines now

Rose Louise Gardens Rose bit her lower lip a little as she didn't expect him to know. She didn't for sure herself even though she was a doctor, she couldn't predicated everything. Nibbling onto her fingernails this time, she finally found the right words.
"I don't know for truly sure but I have calculated it around four months. I don't want people to know really, since I just don't want it to be true myself. I keep thinking that with everything that as happened, is a bad dream, that I would wake up and everything be ok, and what I have seen now didn't happen. I know it sounds stupid, but I guess this is what I feel" she felt more embarrassed and looked down. As felt a tinge again and she looked at her watch. She really wanted to go home soon.
"You don't have to you know. I am big girl who can look after herself." She smiled some more. "But if you really want to Sam, then I guess I wouldn't mind the company", she finished. "Also my name is Rose, just in case you didn't catch it", she said again.
Putting her hand in her pocket and she pulled on some mints. after taking one for herself and chewed her mint. "Would you like one?" she offered and passed the mints over, as she chewed on them, and drank the rest of her coffee the same time.

Sam smiled.
"I won't tell anyone unless you want me to" Sam offered kindly. "And I'm sure you can take care of yourself" Sam winked at Rose. "But I think there are things out there now that not even the most prepared person could handle"
Rose handed him a mint. He shook his head.
"No thank you" He said warmly. He stretched.
"I'll be right back. I gotta clock out" Sam said softly gently touching her elbow. Sam got up and headed to the staff section. He clocked himself out and then came back to where Rose was sitting. He grinned and offered his arm to her.
"Ready?" he asked cheerfully.
True, he was chivalrous. Most men hadn't done that in years, but not him. He was always a gentleman and behaved accordingly to that. She was real pretty. Sam felt sorry for her. He didn't know how she had become pregnant, and that wasn't any of his business...unless she wanted to tell him when or if she was ready.
Sam checked his cell phone. Emma, his niece still hadn't called him. He sighed. He hoped she was ok and not getting into trouble

Rose Louise Gardens Rose saw him ready to leave, she placed her mints back into the pocket and got up with a struggle as the chair have hurt her back a little. She wrapped her red coat over her person. She put some weight, but not lot as she haven't eaten properly for the past week. Her body was still crying out alcohol, and she was resisting the urges a lot. Wrapping the robe around her body, and tied it a little.
"Yeap I am ready now." She smiled as he wasn't like the other guys or even her ex husband. Rose did feel really stupid that she got pregnant by someone she didn't know. "You don't know what job I had did you? I was one of the doctors who injected that needle into children. I didn't know it would have cause this. I know I was bitch then, but that was the drink. I know that now. I am different person I swear." She just started blabbed out.
"How am I going to explained to this child that I have no clue on who his/hers father is? It would grow up to hate me like everyone else have. Your would hate me when you find out what I am like. I am just a slut. Alcoholic dirty broken down doctor slut", she cried as her hormones were all the over the place right now. And that she admitted to a problem, was good and step two in the recovering plan.
Wiping her tears she looked at Sam again. "Sorry Sam, just irogne me I am talking stupid, due to my hormones going all over the place.", she reached in and grabbed a tissue and wiped her eyes carefully as being a mother scaring her lot, to the point she feels she be a bad mother just like her own mother.

Sam watched her as they left the Starbucks. He listened to her intently, not interrupting her. Finally, he spoke.
"Alcohol is the most disgusting thing on the planet" He said. "However, I'm not the type to judge. Drinking while pregnant isn't smart. I doubt you're a slut" Sam added softly as she began crying.
Sam stopped and gently handed her a tissue.
"It's fine I understand. I have a 15 year old niece so you can imagine what goes on with her" Sam chuckled light heartedly. They turned the corner and Sam turned to Rose.
"Where do you live? What's your address?" He asked her curiously, making sure that things around them were safe. Re-Animated were lurking in some of the buildings, so you had to be alert. Sam was a shifter, so it was in his nature to be protective.
He shifted into a cute border collie dog. He didn't tell Rose this just yet but he will eventually.
"Nah. I don't think you had any idea what was going to happen. I wouldn't blame yourself for what happened Rose" Sam said shaking his head at her. His blue eyes caught the sunlight, making them glow slightly.

Rose Louise Gardens "I don't drink now. I haven't touch alcohol for almost a week now. I didn't know I was pregnant. When I found it out I quit right away, I know it's not good for me or the baby anyway. You see I was on the pill and it just didn't work this time. I guess it was my fault for just sleeping around by random guys that come pass" she smiled a little. "Yeah I understand"
Walking with him as the neighborhood have changed. Rose didn't what to say as she haven't got a home. She been held prisoner on some camp site for while, and have been staying at random places for so long she just can't remember.
"Sam. I haven't got a home. I have been sleeping rough fo so long I just can't remember now" she looked down, as she saw her car. "This is my house right here. I sleep in my car, have been doing it for two weeks now. So welcome in" she smiled and looked at him, wonder what he say now, that she was pregnant and homeless the same time.

Sam looked at her startled. He shook his head.
"Oh no. You're not sleeping in your car this time. You're gonna stay with me. I have more than enough ample room for you" Sam said earnestly. "Leave your car here. We can come and get it in the morning. My car is right there. I'm not taking no for an answer."
He pointed to a sleek black GMC Terrain SUV. He gently took her hand and led her toward the truck. He opened the passenger side door for her.
"Hop in" He said.
Once she was seated, Sam closed her door. He went around to the driver's side and hopped into the seat. He turned on the car and put it in drive. He easily peeled away from the curb and began heading back to his house.
He pulled into his garage about 15 minutes later. The garage door closed and he shut off the engine and got out. He helped Rose out as well and then led her into the house through the garage entrance. It led into the kitchen. Sam dropped his keys on the counter and then motioned to the kitchen table.
"Sit. Would you like something to eat or drink?" Sam offered going to the fridge and opening it. "My niece Emma is sleeping over her friends house so she won't be home tonight. You can take the guest bedroom across from her room. There's clean sheets already on the bed and a quilt. It has a bathroom adjoining"
Sam beamed. He headed into the hallway and found one of his extra closets. He grabbed a long sleeved plaid shirt and then went back into the kitchen. he handed Rose the shirt.
"This should fit you. You can shower and everything upstairs," He offered her softly.

Rose Louise Gardens Rose couldn't say anything before Sam the guy she just met took her to his home. It was lovely home, when she got out and began to examined the couch and tables. She wasn't being fussy or anything, just really curious and trying to remember her own home, before the disaster happen. Mismatched eyes were scanning the walls and looking at the photos. She saw a animal in one of the photographs, Rose adores dogs so she turned around and decided to ask him a question.
"Have you got a dog? Its just that I saw a dog in one of your photographs." She asked smiling some more, while she sat down on the couch.
"No thanks I am alright", she turn down the food, even though she was starving. Resting her back which was killing her right now. Her stomach kept on rubbling a little but she kept on ironging it. He then handed her a shirt and she was confused again.
"I am fine honesty", she closed her eyes for moment. She was totally exhausted, and with her head resting on her hand, she fell fast sleep. For the first time in a long time she was able to sleep without any fear. Her right hand was resting on her stomach, as she slept some more, and her senses were still on full alert, ready to get away from danger if any should come.

Sam saw her dozing off. He laid the shirt by her incase she wanted to change later on. He grabbed a throw and gently covered her with it. Deciding to leave her be for a bit, Sam headed into Emma's room.
He picked up some of her clothes and prepared to do the laundry. Granted she was fifteen, old enough to do her own laundry, but Sam didn't mind. He spoiled her probably but that was how he was. When he loved something so much like that, there wasn't anything he wouldn't do.
Before she'd dozed off, she'd asked if he had a dog. He kept his expression neutral. She didn't know he was a shapeshifter.
"Erm, yes i do. Right now he's over at a neighbors house" Sam said quickly.
When she'd completely dozed off, Sam headed into the basement to start the laundry. Once it was set, he headed back upstairs to the kitchen. He made himself a sandwhich and grabbed a coke. He sat in the kitchen, reading silently to himself. Rose needed some rest right now she'd apparently been through a lot. Being pregnant obviously made it that much harder.
Sam knew Emma would probably like Rose. Emma was outgoing and a firecracker. Thinking of her brought a smile to his face. He checked his watch. It was 11:39 PM. She was more than likely asleep now over at the Mandan's. He'd definitely see her tomorrow. Sam continued to read quietly, letting Rose sleep in the living room.
