Marnie yawned. She was curled up on the couch with Lily sitting on the floor playing with a doll Marnie had found. She seemed perfectly content and happy with them. She took a shine to Derrick and it warmed Marnie's heart to see that. She still felt sad that they weren't going to have a baby but that would come with time. She felt it.
It was about 9 PM. Marnie was dressed in just a long shirt that reached past her knees and white ankle socks. Her hair was pulled into a ponytail. She was watching TV. The house was fairly quiet. Derrick had gone off to hunt. She hated being without him but she knew he would be back shortly. Lily turned around and gave Marnie a huge grin. Marnie playfully extended her foot down and lightly bopped Lily on the back with it. Lily laughed happily and went back to her doll.
About a half hour later, Marnie had dozed off. Lily had crawled up with Marnie on the couch with her head resting on her thigh. Marnie heard a crash coming from the kitchen. She woke up abruptly, thinking that maybe Derrick had dropped something. She carefully got up . Lily had heard it too and woke up. Marnie grabbed Lily's hand and they began slowly walking toward the noise.
"Derrick? is that you?" Marnie called. No response. Marnie easily slipped into the kitchen. She saw the back door lying off its hinges at an angle. Her breathing sped up and panic began seeping in. She heard a growl to the right. A Re-Animator stood there. It was a woman. She was wearing a floral dress. Her milk white eyes spied Marnie and Lily. She began walking toward them. Marnie screamed and fled back into the living room, grabbing the cordless phone in the process. The Re-Animator followed them fairly close, snarling and trying to grab Marnie in the process.
Marnie quickly dialed Derricks' cell phone number.
"Derrick! It's me! There's a Re-Ani in the house!" Marnie cried into the phone. She ran into her room and yanked open the large walk in closet. She closed the door behind her and locked it and then scooted to the back of it and huddled in a heap on the floor. Lily was clinging to her tightly sobbing. Marnie too had tears flowing down her face.
"Please help!" Marnie cried. There was a loud bang on the door and Marnie screamed into the phone when the phone went dead in her hands.

Derrick started his day off early, as usually. Marnie didn't like the face that he was still hunting but it was not an easy habit to break. He had brought his southern ways of tracking and hunting down pray to take down the Animaters. It was something that came naturally to him and it was, strangely enough, something he enjoyed. The look of sadness on his partners face always made him feel bad every time he went out but it had been something they discussed many times. Derrick assured her that hunting wasn't something he was going to give it. It was his contribution to the infested world. Plus he convinced her that he would be safe. Being himself in danger was something he had done for years and had come out unscathed most of the time. He hadn't been injured seriously yet and he was positive that he never would be. What concerned him the most was safety of the two girls back at the house. Marnie and Lily were his main focus now and in order to keep them safe he had to get right of the Animaters.
Derrick had been patrolling one area on the outskirts of the town for most of the day. His goal was to keep them out as much as possible and it was working so far. As he scouted some area he heard his cell phone ring and answered it without hesitation. The only person calling him would be Marnie. "Hello?" He started speaking as the voice on the other end was screaming at him. She was breaking in and out but there had been one word that he clearly made out before the phone line was disconnected Re-ani. Without another moment to think Derrick was running to the SUV and spreading out of the are back to the house. With normal everyday traffic it would have taken him twenty minutes to get across town but luckily no one was on the road. Probably one of the only fortunate things about the world being overcome with an apocalypse. He sped into the drive way and came to a screeching halt. He practically lunged out of the vehicle, gun ready in hand as he entered the house. "Marnie? He yelled throughout the place not seeing anyone in site. He scanned the kitchen, noticing the broken down door and quickly hurried to other parts of the house.
When he walked into their bedroom he noticed the Animatr and took aim. "Marine stay in there." Derrick quickly ordered before the attention of the living dead was now on himself. "Come on." He mumbled to the lady the stumbled his way. Without keeping his eyes off of her he backed into the hallway and out the house. The last thing he needed was a dead body in there or for Lily to be scared by the gunshot. Once he was in the road Derrick took fire.

Marnie heard Derrick outside the door. He had ordered her to stay in there. Marnie clung to Lily. After a few moments, she heard the familiar pop of gun fire going off. Marnie was shaking violently. She pressed her face into Lily's hair as she clung to her. She was scared to leave the closet.
Marnie grabbed Lily's hand and slowly opened the closet door. It was quiet. She slid into a heap on the floor next to her bed and nightstand. Lily crawled into her lap and stayed close by.
"Derrick!" she cried.
She didn't want to be alone right now. When Derrick came back into the room, Marnie let out a frightened sob and threw her arms around him. She buried her face into his chest as she sobbed.
"Oh God I thought it was going to kill me and Lily" She sobbed into the material of his shirt. Lily clung to his left leg. She knew it was going to take a lot to calm her down at this point.
After about an hour, Marnie was still shaking. Lily managed to calm down. Derrick had fixed the door and even reinforced it, along with everything else in the house to ensure that it was safe. Marnie pulled down the covers of the bed and slid in. She was lying on her back with her hair fluffed around her on the pillow. Derrick had slid in beside her. The top two buttons of her shirt had opened and she raised a hand to her forehead.
"I wish the world was as is before any of this happened" she said as fresh tears formed. She let her hand drop and turned to look at Derrick. She gently touched him.
"If anything happened to you I wouldn't want to go on" she said quietly.

Derrick hurried back into the house, making sure the front door was secure for now. He would deal with the back door soon enough. First he had to make sure his girls were okay. He stepped into the room and noticed Marnie was out of the closest and huddle with Lily in the corner. He could see the sheer horror in her face as she clung to him. Her wrapped one arm around Marnie's waist, holding her tightly, and rested his free hand on the back of Lily's head. "It's okay. I'm here now." Derrick kissed her forehead as he offered comforting words. She had every right to be frightened. If she hadn't been able to get ahold of him, who knew what would have happened. The phone call alone was enough to freak him out but to walk in on an Animater trying to attack the ones he loved made him feel even worse. Derrick had accepted two new people into his life. Two that meant the world to him and if they were to ever get hurt he wouldn't be able to live with himself. It was his duty now to protect them but when he thought he was doing just that he was actually leaving them in harms way. It would take some time for them to recover. Day to day life would not be easy for them in this world and the close calls would only leave more scars. Not only physically but mentally as well.
For the next hour Derrick has spent taking out his anger on the house. If a modern day home wasn't safe enough for living then he wasn't sure what would be. He fixed the back door and boarded it up with wood. He boarded all the doors leading into the house with would expect for the front. Instead he would install more locks and barricades out front so the living dead wouldn't reach that far. He worked off a sweat and some emotions stirring up inside but even as he re-entered the house to join Marnie he still couldn't help but me emotionally compromised. Derrick could tell she was still upset as well due to the tears running down her cheeks. He whipped some away with his finger tips and stared at her as she spoke. "Nothing is going to happen to me." He caressed her cheek softly. "And I won't let anything happen to you and Lily either. I promise." He said sternly to get his point across. If he ever lost Marnie he wouldn't know what to do. Derrick never wanted to let her go and all he could think about as he rolled on top of her was that he would make this work somehow. He justed wanted her to be happy.
Derrick ran his fingers threw her blonde locks as he leaned down and began to kiss her. He was a gentle as the first time. His roughness came from wanting her, as if she were about to disappear or leave. He wanted everything about her.

Marnie kissed him back. It was gentle at first, then he got a little rough, but Marnie responded back the same way as though he would just vanish into thin air. Marnie wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down more. She placed her chin over his shoulder.
She responded to every move he made. When they were finished making love, Marnie was snuggled up against Derricks' left side with her arm draped over his stomach and her head resting on his chest. Her cheek was pressing against his bare skin. She let out a content sigh.
"You're so amazing" she whispered to him, closing her eyes and enjoying the feel of his body against hers. Her blond hair was fluffed around her shoulders now. She was so relaxed at this point. He had that affect on her.
Marnie tightened her grip around Derrick and dozed off, and she dreamed....
Marnie was sitting on the lawn. A little boy and Lily were playing not to far from her. She grinned at them and went back to reading a book she had been holding. There was a noise coming from the curb. Marnie glanced up and saw Derrick approaching. She jumped up and went to run to him but something made her stop. His eyes were milk white. He had a bite mark on his neck, but it wasn't bleeding. Lily immediately got up and ran toward Marnie, but the little boy wasn't sure what to do, being that was his father. Derrick attacked the little boy and he began approaching Marnie and Lily now. Marnie picked up a rifle and aimed it at her husband. She could feel the terror and pain in the dream. Her un-dead husband kept approaching making in human noises. Marnie had tears streaming down her cheeks as she aimed it at his forehead. She pulled the trigger. Marnie screamed
Marnie woke up screaming and sat bolt upright with her hand over her heart. It was pounding in her chest and she could still feel the total horror and terror from the dream. Sweat clung to her body making her shirt stick to her back. Marnie bent forward and drew her knees up. She pressed her face into her thighs and tried to get her breathing back down to normal. Her hair fell forward, shielding her face.

Derrick wrapped an arm around Marnie as the both cuddled next to each other. Their love making this time had been more intense due Animater attack. For him, it felt as though his life was close to slipping away and if anything had happened to Marnie or Lily that would be the end of him. When he had lost his real family nine years ago there wasn't much he could do about it. The Apocalypse had came about suddenly. He hadn't been prepared to defend them but it was different for his new family. Derrick had years of personal training and hunting skills that taught him to survive. With those he could protect the two women in his life right now. Coming so close to losing them was a mistake on his part. He should have secured the house more. Or even better, he should have been home but for now he was grateful nothing serious happened. For now he would treasure what he had and do his best to keep them in his sight as much as possible.
Having Marnie in his arms was comforting. It mad him realize that he was lucky and fortunate that he got him in time. He finally began to calm down and shed away all the emotions he had been holding in. It hadn't been long before the two of them were fast asleep. It had been a rough day and Derrick was exhausted but some time into the night he was woken by Marnie screaming. He wanted to jump out of the bed, almost furious because he thought another Animater got into the house but as he sat up he realized she was still next to him. He let out a soft sigh of relief as his fingers massages his droopy eyelids. "Marnie are you okay?" Once his vision was clear he scouted closer, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. Derrick pressed his lips softly against her neck a couple of times before resting his chin on her shoulder. "What's wrong? Did you have a bad dream?" He asked assuming that it was the only other reason she could be screaming. He was grateful that she wasn't being attacked again but he could tell that she was having a hard time with overcoming what had happened. He understood and all he could do was hope he could help. Sometimes it took others longer to recover from a scary situation as they had been in. Derrick had been use to those run ins with the living dead but allowing new people into his life and almost losing them was new.

Marnie slumped against Derrick and began feeling a bit better. She let out a content sigh when he pressed his lips against her neck. She laid back down again and snuggled up close to him so they were facing each other. She put her face close to his on the pillow and gently ran a finger down the length of his face.
"Yes. I had a horrible dream that you turned into a Re-Animator" She whispered shutting her eyes, trying to forget the horrible dream. Her nose was practically touching his.
"And I saw what I think is our son in the dream as well" She said breaking into a grin. That memory was the only bright spot in that dream but what happened next wasn't exactly the best thing.
She sighed "I'm sorry I scared you. You must think I'm retarded or something"
She said lowering her eyes to his chin. She began feeling much better now that she was facing Derrick. She began feeling a bit stupid too about reacting so badly to a nightmare, but deep down in her gut it made her sick to her stomach to have to even THINK about shooting Derrick, someone she was in love with so deeply. She placed her palm against his chest and waited for his response

Derrick stared back into those soft, hazel eyes as she layed back down next to him. He pulled the covers over their shoulders and ran his fingers along the smooth skin of her arm. From what he understood, most women enjoyed being touched in the simplest of ways. The feeling of another close to them made them feel comfortable and safe. He wasn't sure if this was true for all people but he knew its how he felt around Marnie. She eased his senses better than anyone he ever knew. Even his own family didn't have that affect on him. They did give him a sense approval and acceptance but the blonde before him gave him purpose. It wasn't something Derrick had felt with anyone before, which was probably why it scared the hell out of him. It was why he tried to run that first morning after meeting her. It was the reason he continued to keep most of his emotions bottled up and despite all his flaws, Marnie still cared about him. He was sure she felt the same ways that he did. From what he could tell, he had the capability to call her down and make her at ease. She continued to make comments about how much she cared and how much happy she was. So he must be doing something right.
Derrick lay silent as he listened to Marnie reveal pieces of her dream. It was understandable after what happened today and there wasn't much either of them could do about the dreams if she continued to think about it. "It was just a dream." He assured her, speaking softly as the distance between them was minamal. He took an interest to one particular part of her dream as she mentioned a son. It was ironic because no more than two days ago Marnie thought she was pregnant and the test came back positive. While part of him had been slightly excited at the idea, part of him was relieved due to the type of environment they would have to raise the child in. Not to mention they already had Lily to take care of. Derrick had been skeptical about the idea at first but with each day his fondness for the little girl grew and he treated her as if she was his own daughter. "Not at all." He assured her that he did not think she wasnt dumb in any way. She was just going threw difficult times and he understood. He could only hope for their sake it wouldn't have to last much longer. Though the apocalypse wouldn't be ending anytime soon.
"What did he look like? Derrick asked as he stroked her cheek. "Our son that is." He made his question more clear. He figured his curiosity would make her feel better.

Marnie smiled as he caressed her cheek. She closed her eyes enjoying the touch. She relaxed when he said that he didn't think she was stupid. She heard him ask what their son looked like. Marnie felt a smile forming on her face.
"He looked a lot like you," she said warmly. She gently scooted closer so that she could pressed her face under his chin into his throat. She could feel and hear his heart beating. She bent her arms against her body and against his.
"I know it was just a dream but it was so horrible," She murmured against his chest.
Hearing his heart and breathing calmed her down even more. She snaked her arm under his and wrapped it around him. She closed her eyes. She yawned.
"I love you so much" She whispered to him. She couldn't stop telling him that. She eventually dozed off again, snuggled up against Derrick.
She felt warm sunlight hit her face and groggily opened her eyes. During the night they'd changed positions. Derrick had her back to her and she was pressed up against his rear with her arm draped over his ribs. She smiled and gently leaned down to plant a kiss on his cheek and smooth away some of his dark hair. She pressed her face into his for a moment before easily getting out of bed, careful not to disturb him. She padded barefoot into the bedroom next door to check on Lily. She was sound asleep too. A warm feeling spread over Marnie. She realized it was probably that maternal feeling. She gently closed the door over a bit and padded down to the kitchen. She entered the bathroom on the first floor and changed out of her long night shirt, pulling on a pair of black jogging pants and a light blue tank top with spaghetti shoulder straps. She pulled her hair into a braid and began cooking breakfast.

Derrick smirked slightly at the thought of what their son would look like. It was interesting just considering what any of their children would look like. Blonde no doubt. Tall, hopefully. Both he and Marnie had great features. He figured nothing could go wrong with any babies they made together. Not that he was thinking of doing that any time soon but in a world like this, what else was there to think about? Lily already looked liked them even though she wasn't their. They could definitely pass as he parents and that thought made him wonder about on-lookers. What would Derrick say if someone comment how adorable their 'child' was. Or assumed that they were a family. Technically speaking, they were. Marnie had already comment on them being a family but it wasn't entirely true. Not that he didn't like the idea, it was just a given fact. He hadn't consider what he'd or say in a situation like that and really pondered on the idea. If and when the apocalypse was over would they carry on with their lives if they had been a real family all along. Lily didn't have her real family anymore so she needed someone to take care of her. Would Derrick and Marnie adopt her as their own? And if they did would they ever tell Lily about her real parents or leave it a secret? It wasn't something he had considered when first saving the little girl but was necessary to consider.
"I love you too." He whispered softly after she had dozed off. Derrick was having an issue expressing his feelings to Marnie. He had indirectly said I love you that night he came back to her house. He acted as if he was dodging the subject and redirected else where but Marnie knew that he loved her. He knew that but it was difficult for someone who had been closed off for so many years to be as open as he one use to be. He knew he was staying for good but a part of him still feared getting to close. He was already as close as you could get but speaking the words was like the icing on a cake and for some reason he was worried if he gave in too much or became more open then it would bite him in the ass. Like Marnie and Lily would disappear.
Once Derrick had woken again from some much needed sleep he noticed that Marnie was no longer next to him. He rubbed his eyes slightly to adjust his vision and slumped out of bed to look for her but once he smelt the sent of fresh food he knew exactly where she was. Before leaving the room he changed into a pair of jeans and fresh clean shirt. He peeked into Lily's room, half expecting for her to be up as well but she was still lying innocently against her pillow. He snuck in and laid next to her until she turned into him and woke up. Derrick picked her up into his arms and carried her into the kitchen where he greeted Marnie with a soft kiss. "You definitely know how to get us out of bed." He teased.

Marnie kissed Derrick back and then spied Lily. She broke into a huge grin and took her from Derrick.
"Dish out the eggs please?" Marnie asked Derrick as she sat down at the table. She sat Lily down next to her and gently began dishing her some eggs. She cut up some of the sausage into small pieces and began helping Lily eat. Marnie smoothed some of Lily's blond hair back way from her face and looked up at Derrick.
"Derrick, can I ask you something?" she asked quietly. "When you saved me from Sam the Re-animated, were you just doing your job or did you have feelings for me on some level?"
Kaileb's words stung her a bit and made her feel insecure. She watched him expectantly.
She pushed her eggs around on her plate, suddenly nervous. She hoped he had had some feelings for her like she had for him when they'd first met. She gripped her fork tightly and took a deep breath.
"Also, do you think we are a family?" she asked him. Lily of course was going to have to be told the truth when she got older. Which Marnie was prepared to do. She didn't believe in lying to the girl. She only hoped Derrick would want a family in the future and if he felt enough to consider the three of them a family. More than likely he did, but she liked to hear it.
Her voice dropped to just above a whisper.
"I know you're scared to get too close to people," She said quietly, keeping her eyes on her plate before slowly raising them up to meet his. "But I am not going anywhere. I promise you that"
She reached her hand out to grasp his, gently squeezing it. She kept her eyes on his, waiting for his response

Derrick took a spot at the table as Marnie took Lily from his arms. The food looked delicious and the sight of them made his stomach growl. He hadn't realized how hungry he was or how little he ate when he was on his own. Being with Marnie and living in a house with a decent supply of food was different for him. He was use to snacking on what he could find while he was on the road. Big meals weren't on the menu for them and he was thankful to get a taste of his old life back now. Derrick dished himself some food and began eating as he watched Marnie help Lily. "Sure." He nodded as she began to speak. Being a conversation with that question always sent off red flags. It was one of the mainly phrases that indicated that they were about to engage into a serious talk. He wasn't worried about the possibilities of what she could ask but he wondered if he had done something wrong. Most serious conversations were brought about someone's action or some type of event and he was half expecting this to be about what happened last night.
Derrick coughed slightly as he was caught off guard. He had no idea why she would be concerned about the first night they met. He was partly confused, not sure of what she was trying to get at with this question or why it had even crossed her mind. What bothered him the most was that he wasn't sure how to answer. There had definitely been sexual attraction towards her from the start but the feelings he had for her had been accumulated over time. "There was an attraction if that's what your looking for. I mean yes, saving you was partly because I'm a hunter and I wasn't going to leave you to be killed. What made you concerned about this?". He raised and eyebrow as he took another bite. Derrick was slightly defensive toward these sudden questions. They seemed to come one after another. Bringing Lily into the discussion sent another red flag that left him feeling uneasy.
"Do I think we are a family?" Derrick stopped eating and sat back in his seat as he looked from Lily and Marnie. "Ya I do. I mean technically we aren't. Lily isn't our child but I thought we agreed that we would take care of her like she was." He some how kept his voice calm as they spoke. He want sure where this conversation was headed or it's intent so he wasn't sure how to feel at the moment. "I know that. Do you think I'll leave?" Derrick retaliated, wondering if that had been her concern the whole time. "Is that what this is about?"

Marnie looked down at her plate.
"Yeah I think I am" Marnie said quietly. "Kaileb got me worried I think" She said offering him a sheepish smile. "He got me feeling a bit insecure"
She inhaled then exhaled.
She offered him a smile. "Yeah I remember. I'm so sorry for bringing this up" She said apologetically and looked at him pleadingly.
She crossed her arms on the table and rested her chin on top of her wrist. She looked at him lovingly.
"Forgive me?" she asked him in a small voice that was filled with hope. She gave him puppy eyes. She was stupid to even FEEL insecure about their relationship. She let Kaileb get to her and that was not good. She leaned over and kissed Lily on the forehead before scooping her up in her arms and placed her on her lap.
She looked at Derrick.
"I don't know how we're going to explain things to Lily when she gets older" Marnie mused sadly gently playing with Lily's blond hair. She raised her hazel brown eyes to Derricks.
"It was stupid of me to let Kaileb get to me" she said

"Oh. I see. Kaileb got you thinking." Derrick nodded but not in an approving way. He had never met the guy but he knew that he was Marnie's exes and from what she said they had been pretty serious. Exes never really concerned him aside from the fact that this one still stuck around. The twenty-seven year old wasn't in the slightest bit threatened by Kaileb but to be really close friends with someone she had sexual relations with just didn't seem right. He wasn't going to tell Marnie how to live her life but if her old boy friend got her worried about the current one she had then Derrick had every right to be concerned. "Don't you think he only says that kind of stuff to you because he still cares about you?" The man's continuous infatuation with Marnie seemed like an obvious sign but she was so sweet and caring that she never considered it. Kaileb had something coming to him if he had the slightest intuition of winning Marnie over. There was no way Derrick would let her go. She meant to much to him.
He went back to eating some more of his eggs so he didn't bark out any rude comments. It wasn't her fault but the thought bothered him. He knew it would have been better just to forget about it but for someone so ego driven it was hard to do. "Don't be sorry." Derrick shook his head as he finished up his meal. He scooted his chair back and went into the kitchen to rinse his plate in the sink. He left it there and went back to the dinning room, only to see Marnie looking at him with puppy dog eyes. "You don't need to be forgiven. It's not your fault." He said with truth in his words. He wasn't mad at her at all. Just as her ex who wasn't minding his own business. Kaileb would be lucky to get any kind words from him if they were to ever meet. Frankly, he was hoping they wouldn't
"Well when that times comes we will figure it out. She'll understand." Derrick knelt down between Marnie and Lily has he looked at both of them. He tickled the little blonde until she squealed and then turned his attention back to his girl friend. "Don't worry about it." He ran a hand threw her hair as he kissed her softly.

Marnie looked at him in relief. She grinned as Derrick tickled Lily. She chuckled herself, then looked at him seriously. Marnie looked down at her hands, which she laced around Derricks. He was kneeling beside her as she was sitting in the chair. Marnie let Lily down and she ran into the living room. Marnie kept her eyes on her lap as she took a deep breath and replied.
"Kaileb and I never had sex. You were my first. Sam and I never did either cause half the time he would abuse me. So you were really the first person I have been intimate with in a long time" Marnie explained to him.
She was glad that he wasnt angry with her for bringing up her moment of doubt. She kissed him back softly and passionately. Marnie ran a hand through Derricks hair.
She smiled "I know he cares about me but if he tries to sabotage our relationship then hes gone. I have no intention of leaving you either. He needs to understand that its over between us. You and Lily are my future now" she said to him.
Marnie pressed her forehead against Derricks causing her hair to fall forward tickling his cheek. She cupped his face with her hands and kissed him softly on the lips
