The lake was lovely as it always was this time of year, it was calm, the trees casting a perfect reflection on the serene surface. There was a slight breeze rustling the leaves but other then that there was no sound. The birds rarely came out here, as well as the other wildlife. Every so often a deer would come out for a drink but the slightest noise and there was no frozen deer in the headlights look. No, they were gone, they left before they even paused to see what it was. For all they knew it could have been a rabbit. But now a days it just wasn't worth it for them to stick around and investigate. It was the difference of life and dead. The Mudo weren't fast enough to catch them but they still rarely stayed in the near vicinity as the dead. Unless they were scavengers, sometimes the crows would come out and eat the dead flesh. You have to wonder if that would kill them and bring them back like the flesh they were eating. These were all questions she wanted to eventually answer. Alone with the never ending one, how do we fix it?
Viridiana sat easily at the lakes edge, shoes beside her and feet neatly pushed underneath the sand in the water. She had a simple white summer dress on and some black flip flops, her hair was braided loosely more to keep it out of her face then anything. It have been a long time since she had left the compound and worn anything other then blood stained scrubs. She was used to having her hair up in a high pony tail and a mask covering her face. God, had someone told her that this was where her life would end up before the apocalypse she would have admitted them to the mental hospital. But somehow she had ended up with a group of crazies trying to find a cure for this stupid virus. She understood though, she had gone with them willingly for a reason but it wasn't the best way to live.
"Nine years now..." she murmured, leaning forward to brush the water with her finger tips. She had been locked up for almost nine years. First by the government to try and fix it before it got out of hand then by the radicals when t had gotten out of hand. Well they didn't lock her up but she had a curfew and was only allowed out when there was no one left to test on. Even then they didn't allow her to carry a gun, simply a knife. They had said she didn't know how to use one but she had grown up with a red neck father, she knew damn well how to use a gun. Viri knew that they just didn't want their Mudo killed. That could be someones daughter or father. In some ways she understood in others she wanted that extra protection. Flopping back she sighed, staring up at the sky.

The lake was one of the few peaceful places around the town. Even now, after the apocalypse it remained beautiful. It was one of the few places he went where he could forget about the damn zombies and focus on being normal. He could forget about being diseased and the potential for change, and just be himself. He had stripped down to his jeans and he’d rolled the bottoms up; dropping his feet into the cool refreshing water. His body lay on the grassy verge and he closed his eyes relaxing as he considered what else he would or could do today. The place was so still, and so it didn’t take a genius to work out that there was someone else about. He could hear them, just resting. A subtle sound now and then but nothing out of the ordinary that could or would usually raise suspicion; only the fact that the lake was usually silent. No animals dared stay for too long, and it was rare that people came by; it was one of the reasons Kaileb liked it so much.
He sat up and watched, spotting a tanned skinned red head talking to herself. There was no denying that she was beautiful. He could see that clearly; her hair braided showing her distinct features; but she looked out of place here. He’d never seen her before and the thought alone made him consider if this was indeed some sort of trap; maybe a set up to have him caught and put into a research facility. But no one knew about his secret. No one knew he was cursed and he wasn’t about to share the news with anyone. He considered his thoughts and shook his head; before grabbing his gun, pushed his damp feet into his sneakers and picked up his tee shirt. He was trained in combat; you sort of had to be living in these dark times.
Kaileb crept quietly around to where the woman lay; staring at the sky and without much warning; his body cast a shadow across hers; his gun held in a position almost ready to fire at her. The safety off, his eyes alert and his hand steady. There was no going back. Whatever this woman was here for he would know. And he would put an end to her if she was something else… but as he looked into her soft eyes, he realised she looked kind and she really was beautiful; it made things a little harder. ”Who the hell are you? And what you doing spying on me?” He asked her firmly, waiting for her response he narrowed his eyes.

Eyes drifted open and closed slowly as if she was slowly dozing off, eyelashes casting shadows across her cheekbones and she finally allowed them to close. The feel the the sun warming her skin was soothing but she dared not drift off. She knew there were things other then the Mudo wandering around. If one of the radicals found her here they would flip, only a few knew she had been released for the day. Everyone else would grab her and haul her butt back. Though she had willingly gone with them in the beginning it had become less and less of her choice to stay as the years went by. Though she still believed in what they were fighting for she was loosing more and more of her freedom as they went along. She had no doubt that soon even these rare outings on her own would be escorted and then maybe disappear all together. It was party her defiant personality that they didn't give her name freedoms but mostly because there were so few doctors left and she was becoming quite an asset to their work.
It was these thoughts that were drifting through her mind like smoke when a chill passed through her and the sun that had been turning her eyelids orange disappeared. Eyes snapped open to a gun pointing down at her. There was no time to register who was holding the gun, for a moment fear flickered across her eyes but it was fleeting. Eyes hardened as if a switch had been flipped and they narrowed dangerously before she sat up. "Fuck you too" she grumbled. Her first thought was that it was one of those god damn radicals but then he asked who she was and why she was spying on him. She paused half way through putting her shoes back on and turned to face him with a shocked look. "Spying on you? Trust me darlin your not that good looking" she practically snarled before standing abruptly, hands on her hips and giving him a daring look. "If your gonna shoot me don't be a pussy and get it over with please!" she snapped.
It had been 5 years ago when she had stopped caring about her own life. When her best friend and colleague had been pushed at a mudo to be bitten by a radical. He had taken the vaccine and survived. When they found that out they needed to know if he was immune to the bites as well. He hadn't been... She had become increasingly hard to handle since that day. But seeing as they had murdered the only other doctor there they had pretty much made themselves reliant on her. "And who the fuck do you think you are pointing a gun at random women on the beach!" she asked, tossing her hands in the air like it was the stupidest idea in the world. Maybe he had thought she was a Mudo but then again he had asked her why she was spying on him. Stupid men, they were all pigs... But as they stood there glaring at each other she couldn't help but study him. He had a cute mess of blond hair and a lean but muscular frame. Okay maybe he was cute enough to spy on, not that she'd ever admit it. Well as least if she was going to die here the world looked somewhat normal and the guy killing her wasn't hard on the eyes either.

Kaileb stared down at the woman who quickly sat up. He thought he had seen a flicker of fear in her eyes but it was short lived. She began to put her shoes on and then looked at him. ”Yeah? I’m pretty sure you don’t really believe that. Most people think I’m pretty good looking.” He smirked although held his stance firmly. He raised an eyebrow as the red head snapped at him. ”You want me to shoot you? Surely things aren’t that bad.” He stated rolling his eyes and then sighed a little, lowering the gun. ”I wasn’t planning on shooting you, but you know, the way things are… you gotta have some protection.” He commented shrugging his shoulders as he glanced over the lake.
He wondered what had turned her so suicidal, but then again most people were these days. Kaileb wasn’t quite sure what it was that was keeping him ticking over. After all he was cursed more than most people, and yet he was here, a smile on his lips. She questioned him and he sighed, ”Why do you think I’m pointing a gun at you? You might be one of those people who are after me.” The words slipped from his mouth without much thought. ”Sorry I mean, you might be wanting to kill me.” He nodded figuring it was a better excuse. Kaileb moved closer to her and then walked past her. He took a seat on the edge of the lake and sighed again, deciding it was all a pointless cause.
Kaileb ran a hand over his hair and rested the gun next to him. ”This lake is one of the only beautiful places left.” Kaileb stared right out onto the lake and left his back to the stranger. Usually he’d be on edge and ready to attack anything that came in his way but Kaileb really had lost his motivation. He was sick of living on the edge waiting for him to turn into some unbearable creature; the way he’d witnessed so many of his friends turn. So if she wanted to kill him, then he’d let her.

God he was full of himself… Yeah she was thinking he was good looing but personality outweighed looks any day in her books. She was used to people calling her beautiful until she opened her mouth and told them right where she thought that they should stick those kind words. It probably really wasn’t a good trait for a doctor but still she tried to burn a hole through this guy with her fiery gaze. Usually she started out pleasant enough with people and then as time progressed her inner bitch came out. As least there was no fakeness between them from the start here. He repeated he comment as a question and she had to clench her teeth from shouting at him about just how bad things were. Was he really that blind? But she tried to soothe her temper. Most people freaked out when they learned that she was working with the radicals.
He made a comment about protecting himself and she shrugged, though he hand was hanging at her side, fingertips brushing the side of her dress, ready to pull the hem up a bit and take that knife out. Nine ear of living in this hell and she had learned how to use the weapon well. But he shrugged, his gun now lowered as he looked to the lake. She forced her posture to relax just a bit as she straightened and flipped a stray hair over her shoulder. And then he answered her question about pointing a gun at her and his first answer made her eyes narrow in suspicion. But he threw out another excuse almost immediately and for the moment she let it slide as he moved around her then sat at the edge of the lake where she had previously been.
She watched him for a short time, feeling the need to tell him that putting his gun on the ground was probably not the best idea but instead she sat beside him and looked out at the lake as well. He seemed distant as he mused about the lake and in that time she picked up his gun that he had left discarded, turning it over in her hand. "What did you mean when you said that I might be one of the ones that were after you? she asked easily as she began taking the gun apart. She used the edge of her skirt to wipe what little sand that had gotten in away before putting it back together, the whole process only taking a few minutes.
It felt good to be doing something again, something she had used to do just for fun. He father had always had an extensive collection of guns and as a kid and teenager she had cleaned them as much as she possibly could. "I’m a doctor, it’s not my job to hunt people down"
[/color] she said absent mindedly as she focused on the gun that as no reassembled in her hands, turning it over and over. She checked the magazine, though she had no idea what kind of gun it was she knew she would know how to use it. Once you get to know the basic gun types beyond that it was just a matter of tampering for a bit before you figured it out.
