Mason sat at his kitchen table a cup of coffee in his hands. He was ever so grateful that he had made the contractor build the house so that it could run off of a generator. But at the time he had been doing that in preparation for the long winters. Never in his wildest dreams did he ever imagine that he would be using it to keep his house running because a rouge vaccine turned practically everyone into a zombie - including his beloved Annie.
Mason would never forget the night when she came home after having the vaccine. For the most part everything was normal, she was going about her evening chores making supper for her small family. Mason had been in the living room, playing with Arin when he heard the glass shatter. When Mason arrived in the kitchen, he took one look at his wife and knew that she was no longer herself. Annie growled at him, literally growled, like something you'd hear from a Dog before she bolted out the back door. That was the last time he ever saw her. But it was a memory that was forever engraved in his mind.
A soft sigh escaped Mason's lips as he glanced over towards the stair case, Arin's five year old frame making its way down and over towards him. Mase picked him up, hugging his son close to him before pressing a soft kiss to the boys forehead. He looked so much like his mother. "Arin, we need to go to the mall and pick up some stuff." He murmured. He always took the boy with him where ever he went, afraid that if he left him with anyone or left him by himself that something bad would happen and he would lose his son as well. Arin simply nodded and agreed with him before going to get his shoes on. Mason stood, running his fingers through his hair as he double check to make sure his gun from work was strapped against his belt. Mason was dressed casual, he didn't wear his uniform all the time, especially not on a day that he was spending with his son. Today he work a pair faded jeans, a pale blue grey and white button up shirt and his work boots. Arin, was dressed in similar clothing except instead of a button up he wore a bright blue t-shirt and a pair of black converse on his feet.
Mason scooped his son up into his arms as he carried him out of the house, locked it securely, and then placed his son inside the now unlocked black chevy camaro. The drive to the mall was a quiet one, Arin fiddled with his seat belt and Nathan avoided looking around the run down town. Things had changed drastically, it was so unreal. He found a good parking spot rather quickly, and only minutes later himself and Arin where walking through the mall.
