Kaileb glanced out over the desolate beach, towards the old ship wreck. He could remember the days when the beach was thriving with bodies, and the sounds of laugher, but that was all a distant memory. Things had become so different now, with most of his friends bodies repossessed he’d never felt so alone. He ran his hand through his blonde hair and sighed with disappointment. This wasn’t exactly the life he’d always wanted to live. It wasn’t as if he could even get on with the knowledge that he was only at risk if he was bitten; because in reality he could turn at any moment. Kaileb didn’t know a whole lot about the virus because he’d tried to avoid most of it’s media. He’d simply wanted to bury his head and hope the whole mess would disappear. But that wasn’t the case, and unfortunately for the blonde man every day felt like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. Every twitch, ache or headache sent him into a fury of anxiety while he waited for the inevitable, but when it didn’t arrive he’d get angry. His anger was just another part of him that wasn’t necessarily controllable. It was something he was convinced was related to the virus because he couldn’t ever remember it being this bad. Nevertheless; whatever the cause it was apart of him.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cigarette; he pursed his lips balancing the poisonous stick between his lips and searched slowly for a lighter. He located it in his back pocket and lit the cigarette, taking a long drawl, savouring the taste. As he exhaled he could feel a whole load of stress escape his body and he smiled gently to himself. He’d started smoking more since he and Marnie split up. He wasn’t sure why, but Kaileb used the cancerous drug as a coping mechanism. Marnie had been the one girl that he’d been close to falling in love with; if he hadn’t actually been there. He couldn’t be sure; his memories were blurred and tainted by the things he wanted to remember. Kaileb still cared about the blonde, that much was certain, and he was confident he’d never find someone like her again. But that wasn’t to say he was moping about. No, in fact he’d not lost any time in finding himself many blondes to replace the physical aspects of their relationship, leaving himself emotionally closed off and cold; not wanting to go through the same pain he’d felt when the blonde had left him.
Nevertheless they were still friends, good friends, despite the fact that she’d moved on and was dating someone else. Kaileb didn’t try to hide the fact that he wasn’t particularly happy about it, or the fact that Derrick wasn’t exactly his favourite guy, but he cared about Marnie, and if she was happy then so be it. She was one of the few people he trusted, and they met up fairly regularly just to talk. It was good to talk to someone who he knew hadn’t been contaminated or effected by the virus. It felt almost reassuring and perhaps even normal… whatever that was these days. He leant against a large rock and pushed his spare hand into the pocket of his jacket, shielding himself from the breeze. If only life could return to the way things were before the flu vaccine ever existed.

Marnie headed down the beach, dressed in a buttermilk bell sleeved blouse and a pair of black slacks. Her shoes sank into the soft sand, leaving perfect impressions behind in the sand. Her blond hair was fluffed around her shoulders. The sun was high in the sky, and warm rays cascaded down. The ocean waves gently rushed onto the shoreline before pulling back out. She had her scope rifle slung over her left shoulder as she walked. She hadn't seen Kaileb in a long time. He'd been her first boyfriend before Sam.
She spied him not too far on the beach and approached him. She wrapped her arms around herself as she stood in front of him. She offered him a friendly smile.
"Hey Kaileb. How are you?" she asked him softly. She hadn't known that he was a Sempe Pai. As far as she knew he was still human. Marnie had small hoop earrings in her ears and a long gold chain around her neck. Her hazel brown eyes studied Kaileb and waited for him to reply.
They'd remained close even though they'd broken up. She still cared about him greatly though. Nothing would ever change that. Even though she was in love with Derrick. Marnie knew that this was going to be interesting when all three of them met.

Kaileb hadn’t actually noticed her approach him. He was zoned out staring out to the coast. The waves lapping the shore, distracting him from the beautiful blonde who had once been his girlfriend. His eyes found hers and then as usual, his eyes travelled down her body then back to her eyes. He smiled warmly, she looked good- she always did and he couldn’t help but wonder if she deliberately made the effort around him. ”Marnie, you look great.” He nodded spotting the rifle around her shoulder. He also had weapons in his back pockets. ”Well minus the gun, girls shouldn’t have to have guns.” He sighed a little; knowing she knew his thoughts on protecting women; in particular Marnie, in the apocalypse.
She asked how he was, Marnie, like most people didn’t know what he was. He’d wanted to tell her, but he hadn’t been able to face the rejection she’d most likely project on to him when she knew he could turn. She’d probably send her hunter boyfriend after him. ”I’m alright, just getting on with things.” He shrugged his shoulders and smirked at her. ”How are you Marnie?” He asked her, raising an eyebrow as he adjusted his position so he could see her better. ”You still loved up with Derrick?” His voice sarcastic and a smirk on his lips as he rolled his eyes. Kaileb had always been the type of person who’d denied the fact that love even existed; yet standing in front of him was the woman who’d stolen his heart a long time ago and he couldn’t quite get his head around the fact that she was now with someone else.
Kaileb moved forward and pulled her into a hug. He knew there was nothing romantic between them but they were friends and he did care about her. He held her against his frame and smiled, ”I’m sorry Marnie, I just don’t get why your dating a hunter.” He sighed and shook his head as he let her go. He always thought she could do better than anyone she’d dated after him, but as time had passed he realised that it was because he still cared about her. Kaileb took a draw from his cigarette again and stubbed it out on the rock he was leaning against. He didn’t like to smoke around Marnie.
He’d been putting off actually meeting Derrick mainly because he was determined not to like him, although he’d probably get to like him; he didn’t want to. ”I… I got a new gun, shot a reanimated.” He smirked, because it was almost like target practice, and he was getting particularly skilled in it. He felt awkward around Marnie and that was because he wanted to tell her what he was, and he guessed until he did; he’d always feel a little off. ”Do you know anyone who got the vaccine and didn’t get infected?” He asked her curiously, almost pretending like it didn’t matter.

Marnie hugged Kaileb back just as softly. When he released her, he had asked if she was still loved up with Derrick. She sighed.
"Yes I am. We found a little girl in the mall. Her parents were turned. We managed to rescue her" she said shivering at the memory of what had happened that day.
When he asked about why she was dating a hunter, Marnie got defensive.
"Because. We are in love with one another. After Sam, Derrick was able to show me gentleness again. Oh. You didn't know about Sam did you?" she asked as realization dawned on her face.
"After we broke up I didn't date for a long time" Marnie explained as she began walking slowly along the beach. It helped that she was moving. She couldn't stay still for very long when re-telling what happened with Sam. "About two years ago, I met Sam. I thought he was the greatest thing in the world. But, he began doing little things that alerted me that maybe not so much. After the V4 vaccine was given out, and things started going down, he had joined the Radicals. He abused me, physically and mentally. Sam, as a Re-Animator, attacked me one day and Derrick rescued me, I realized that Derrick wasn't like Sam. He showed me gentleness that I desperately craved." Marnie looked up at Kaileb. She gently wound her arm around his as they walked, a purely friendly gesture.
"So," she breathed. "That's why Derrick and I are so close. But that doesn't mean I don't care about you" she said softly poking him in the ribs affectionately. "You were a wonderful boyfriend also and I'm glad we remained friends"
When he asked if she had known anyone that had taken the vaccine but didn't turn, Marnie frowned.
"I've heard that some people became 'carriers'" Marnie said slowly. "If they bite or scratch someone, those people tun into Re-Animated. " Marnie said to him. "Why do you ask?""

Kaileb watched her in anticipation as she told him about a little girl in the mall. ”Cool, what did you do with her? Don’t tell me you’ve adopted her with Derrick and your playing happy families?” He raised an eyebrow playfully. It was an odd world that they lived in and it would have been considered strange to talk about death and dying in the past, but right now; everyone was killing and saving because it was a fight for survival. ”I seen a reanimated kid the other day. That was freaky.” He told her sighing, not elaborating on the fact that it had been hard to kill because it just looked all wrong. Still he’d done it because he wanted to survive, and he’d have expected Marnie or anyone else to do the same, regardless of how freaky it all was.
The blonde ran a hand over his messy hair and sighed as Marnie tried to defend her position with Derrick. ”A hunter, gentle? Yeah right. And no; who the hell is Sam?” Kaileb asked curiously wondering if she’d been seeing Sam before or after they split up. He knew it was most likely to be after; Marnie didn’t particularly seem like the type of girl to cheat on someone but in his eyes you never really knew a person. She started to walk and he walked with her, wishing he hadn’t stubbed out his cigarette. For some reason he felt nervous. He listened to her and he frowned, wondering why she hadn’t come to him if she’d been abused. ”Why didn’t you tell me… I could have helped?” He asked her curiously biting his bottom lip. But then it dawned on him that she referred to Sam as a re-animator. ”Was Sam a Sempe pai?” He asked her curiously wondering if this would alter his position with her. ”So Derrick was prince charming and you decided to fall in love with him? He was just doing his job Marnie.” Kaileb sighed trying not to sound harsh but he couldn’t exactly help it. She wasn’t being sensible. She linked him and he allowed it; they were good friends despite the fact that he was so obviously into her.
Kaileb laughed a little as she poked him in the ribs, it was obvious she’d known he was jealous. ”Yeah well I cant be that much of a wonderful boyfriend… I’m single remember.” It was times like this in which Kaileb wanted to have a girlfriend; to be locked away in his apartment with someone who actually cared whether his heart stopped beating. If it stopped beating.
Marnie frowned and she explained what she’d heard. ”Yeah I know, but do you know anyone like that? I mean would you be their friend?” He asked her, realising he wasn’t doing a particularly good job of hiding what he wanted to ask in a semi subtle way. ”I just found out that one of my good friends is one of them… do you think they can be trusted? Given a chance?” He lied, which he knew would have been slightly obvious to her since for some reason Kaileb couldn’t effectively lie in front of Marnie; despite the fact that he could win Oscars in front of others.

Marnie raised an eyebrow at him.
"Yes I know he was just doing his job. We have a very deep connection that goes beyond what I've felt before" Marnie said irritably. No matter how much Marnie explained to Kaileb how deeply Derrick cared about her and how things were a bit different, she doubted whether or not he would actually listen cause she knew he probably still had feelings for her.
She couldn't tell him to stop, because it would be like asking someone to stop breathing. But Kaileb had to understand things were not the way they were before. The important thing was that Marnie was happy. She caught the teasing tone in his voice and nodded.
"Acutally yeah we kept her. We couldn't very well throw her out could we?" she asked arching a nicely formed eyebrow at him. She shrugged when he asked why she hadn't told him about Sam.
"I felt ashamed really. I felt as though it was my fault." She admitted to him. "And you'll find someone special I know it" she beamed at him gently hugging his arm tightly as they walked.
She felt bad that he was single now, but she couldn't change that. She leaned up and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek.
"How about I treat you to dinner? Derrick will be out hunting most of the evening. I could cook you dinner and you can meet Lily" she beamed happily at him. She knew that once he met Derrick things would not go as peachy king as she had hoped. But she only hoped that Derrick would trust her enough. Once Marnie was in love she was loyal. She would never cheat on him. She waited eagerly for his response.
"You know I make a mean baked ziti" she tempted him grinning broadly.
She smiled.
"Well I would be friends with a Sempe Pai sure. As long as they didn't try and bite me" she added deadpan, but was serious."Sam was actually a human who turned Radical." she added.

Kaileb felt slightly put out by Marnie’s obvious irritation with him. So she cared about Derrick way more than she’d ever cared about him; that was basically what it came down to. Which was fine, well it wasn’t but still that wasn’t necessarily the point. He had to be fine about it because he’d lost Marnie many years ago; for reasons which he couldn’t really remember. It was most likely because they hadn’t been too important. Either way it hurt to know his ex girlfriend; the love of his life had moved on and he had to also. At least she was happy; although he sort of hoped she wasn’t.
He shook his head in disbelief as Marnie told him she’d brought the little girl home with her. It was typical of her and it made him smile, no matter how much he really didn’t believe in it. ”Well I don’t know, you could have maybe taken her to some shelter or something.” He suggested not really sure what he’d do had it have been him in that situation. He rolled his eyes and laughed a little. ”I can just picture it now; you’re the mother, and he’s the father.” He smirked at his own joke and shook his head. Real families didn’t exist these days. Instead of being taught how to ride a bike kids were being shown how to use a gun. It just wasn’t right.
Kaileb felt slightly annoyed that she hadn’t told him about this Sam character, but he let it slide anyway. His blue eyes looked up to the sky as she suggested he’d find someone special. ”Seriously Marnie, I’m a lone wolf. No one is going to want to actually be in a relationship with me in this day and age and to be honest, I don’t know if I could deal with anything serious. It’s so much easier getting laid now that a lot of people are living for the moment.” He smirked as he hugged her arm. What he’d said was true, he wasn’t sure about a relationship. The few women he knew were either taken or floozy. She leant up and kissed his cheek and he smiled, this girl messed with his head in more ways than she could ever realise, but he wasn’t about to tell her that.
He knew she was a good cook and staying in her home would be safer than roaming around the beach; but the thought of being in Derrick’s home wasn’t one that sat with him well. Nevertheless it was about making the effort and that’s exactly what Kaileb was going to do. ”Yeah okay then.” He gave in, maybe if Derrick was there then the two might even get along. He just hated the fact that Derrick was a hunter, and the minute he found out about Kaileb being a Sempe Pai he was bound to try and hunt him down; just on the off chance that he turned.
He listened to Marnie’s response and he shrugged his shoulders. ”I guess that’s a good point. I bet Derrick wouldn’t though.” He added absent mindedly as he contemplated his situation, wondering for how much longer he could keep his secret, secret.

Marnie looked at him shocked.
"A shelter? like she's some kind of dog? really" she said incredulously.
That was one thing that Marnie realized separated Kaileb from Derrick. Derrick would've taken in a little girl without question. Kaileb would've dropped her off at the local shelter like she's a dog. Marnie shook her head in disbelief.
She nodded when he accepted her offer to come over and have dinner. Marnie narrowed her eyes at Kaileb's joke about being a family. She bit her tongue. Forcing a smile to her face Marnie smiled.
"Actually yeah you're quite right" she said easily. "Awesome! Come by about seven then. Derrick will be home by then and all of us can have dinner" She said cheerfully.
Marnie looked at him. "You never know. There are still a lot of women around that haven't turned into mindless zombies. You still could find someone. Don't say never you never know"
Marnie began remembering little ways as to why she actually did break up with Kaileb. While that was irrelevant now, it seemed to bug her a bit more than it normally wouldve. She waited for his response.

Kaileb looked at her and raised an eyebrow, ”Yes really. You can’t take all of the strays you find. I just cant see why she had to be taken in. Why you couldn’t just do what anyone else would have done. But then that’s you and Derrick all over; always trying to play the hero.” His outburst was particularly uncalled for but nevertheless he was feeling a little irritated. Derrick was scoring points and it was beginning to make Kaileb hate the man even more.
Kaileb sighed as she said Derrick would be having dinner with them, and she agreed about being a happy family. It sucked something rotten. ”Really? I’m not sure that will be a good idea. Derrick wont like me. I’m your ex boyfriend and he wont like that.” He added wondering if she was doing it on purpose so that the two could actually get along or so that Kaileb would just leave her alone. ”Marnie; I get that you’ve moved on, and I’m trying, but putting me in a room with your boyfriend isn’t really gonna help.” Kaileb told her honestly, quite possible having been the most honest he’d ever been.
Marnie tried to encourage him about his failed love life and he shrugged his shoulders. ”We’ll see, but I think it’s more likely I get turned into a mindless zombie than fall in love.” He commented bluntly; knowing that it was highly likely that he would turn. "Marnie, I'm not exactly a loveable person. You know that, and I've got my head around the fact that I'm probably going to be alone forever but thanks for trying to make me feel better." He smiled weakly and then shrugged his shoulders.
