As a former DEA agent, and Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps., Asher is used to following orders, and doing what he feels will accomplish his mission. As such, he tends to think, before acting. But, once he starts acting, he doesn't stop until he's done. And things aren't always pleasant once he's done.
With the rise of the "zombies", Asher considers it his mission to gather what survivors he can and protect them, at all costs, even laying down his life if he must. As such, he feels he must become a leader, until a better one can be found. It is a prospect he is not looking forward too at all, as he has only led small groups of soldiers, who are used to following orders.
When dealing with people, Asher tends to stick to the point, almost seeming rude. He rarely connects with people on any sort of level, and only fully trusts other members of the military. He also strongly believes that the Coast Guard doesn't count as any form of military group.
and the rest of it:
Asher was doing a joint op with the CIA, chasing down a terrorist cell, when the "vaccine" was developed. When people began to turn, Asher didn't know anything was wrong until he lost communication with his contact in the CIA.
When he called his LT at the base he had been stationed at beforehand, he learned about the vaccine and was called back. He arrived in time to find the entire base infested. After ordering the pilot of his helicopter to leave, Asher made his way to the armory, stocked up on weapons and ammo, and made his way to the vehicle pool, where he managed to secure a truck and escape.
He's been driving ever since, looking for other survivors. Each time he runs into a group of "zombies", he clears them from their hideouts before moving on.
