on a scrap of paper found among the final possessions of ID#01182 (deceased):
There were dark and strange things long before we ever built storm drains
for them to go sliding through: we painted them on cave walls, illuminated
them in the margins of older-than-dust manuscripts only to have them show
up in children's tales hundreds of years later, and recently it's accounts of
interactions with the impossible spilled from mouths wracked by panic or
placid with calm. We've largely written it off as the desperate
communications of the uneducated, the mentally infirm, or the extremely
bored and imaginative.
But I'm telling you, they exist! They've always been here, straddling the line
between exposure and obscurity.
And not only did the Archer Totes corporation find them, they're trying to
patent the whole thing. Imagine seeing little Archer-branded do-it-yourself
bloodsucker or bodychanger kits right next to your Archer-branded diabetic
supplies. Imagine never having to sleep or eat again unless you wanted to.
Imagine your unwilling death needing to be carefully calculated and bravely
executed.
Imagine! Us, human-minded but not human-bodied, in perpetuity. That's
what Archer Totes wants. Turning a profit is just a bonus. So... Stay safe.
Don't go to the hospitals. Don't sign their waivers. You think the government
doesn't know? You think the president doesn't want to live forever?
While I can still feel.... I feel sorry for you.
